Lucas
Lucas’ diagnosis came quickly, right at the beginning of the pandemic. I remember it as if it were yesterday — a few times he complained of a headache, and I kept thinking… children don’t get headaches! We reached out to our wonderful pediatrician, who, even from a distance, guided everything and quickly understood what was happening.
Our lives changed in a matter of minutes. The doctor released the report shortly after the CT scan, which had been done on a Friday afternoon. Within three hours, we were admitted to a hospital in São Paulo — just enough time to pack our bags and travel from the countryside to the city. At the time, in addition to Lucas, we had Matheus, who was just one year old. We arrived in São Paulo feeling lost, scared, and full of questions… but, thankfully, we were very well received.
Lucas’ first round of treatment lasted exactly one year — surgery, radiation, and chemotherapy. He was a true warrior. He stayed strong the entire time, facing challenges that left even us adults deeply afraid. He became our example of determination, perseverance, resilience, and a will to live.
At the end of that first treatment, we had a good prognosis. But, sadly, after one year and four months, the cancer returned. And once again, we moved to São Paulo — this time, searching for a miracle.
During this second phase, Lucas had just turned 8, but he was incredibly mature for his age — everything he went through made him grow up very quickly. He was admitted on November 9, 2022, and what followed were two and a half years of many battles: three transplants, countless surgeries, until our warrior could finally rest at the age of 10.
Without a doubt, this was the greatest challenge of our lives. Every day, we continue to face the pain of grief, trying to find new meaning and keep going — especially for our little Matheus.
We believe in MBI and in its mission to change this reality, where so many of our children are lost to medulloblastoma.
Lucas was full of life and joy. He loved telling jokes and being on stage. He was a child full of light who charmed everyone around him — a boy with a truly unique character and a deep sense of justice. He dreamed of getting married and becoming a soldier, to help change the injustices in the world.
