It’s never easy to receive a diagnosis of cancer, a disease surrounded by taboos. But, according to businessman Fernando Goldsztein, 56, the personal diagnosis is nothing compared to the pain of hearing that your son has the disease.

“You feel lost, you want to trade places with him. It’s a very strange feeling,” he says. In 2004, when he had chondrosarcoma (a malignant bone tumor), Goldsztein underwent treatment, removed part of his heel, received a graft, and today he even runs marathons.

But when his son Frederico, who was 9 years old at the time, was diagnosed with medulloblastoma – a brain tumor with a low survival rate –, the situation was different. We would like to thank Estadão and journalist Ana Lourenço for sharing our story.
